We are literally on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds surrounded by the Vale of York, Ryedale, Lincolnshire Wolds and the Humber Estuary. With such a great location, whether you are walking, driving, bird watching or just relaxing, there are plenty of things to do in and around Rudstone Walk.

Bird Watching and Wildlife Interests [top]

Bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts are really well catered for at Rudstone Walk itself and in the surrounding area. We have at least weekly visits from our local pair or red kites plus numerous common and not so common birds to the garden and fields that make up our 80 acres. The following have all been spotted at Rudstone Walk: Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, Gold Finches, Green Finches, Chaffinch, Linnets, Greater and Lesser spotted Woodpecker, Wood Pigeons, Pied Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Long Tailed Tits, Blue Tits, Wren, Turtle Dove, Collard Dove, Jackdaws, Rooks, Kestrel, Buzzard, Swift.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has many sites in our area The most famous of which is probably Spurn Point just an hour from Rudstone Walk.

Local RSPB sites include Bempton Cliffs The reserve is open all year round and a visitor centre is open daily from March - November and every weekend in winter. In spring and summer the magnificent chalk cliffs are home to over 200,000 nesting seabirds including Puffins, Gannets, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots and Fulmars. Blacktoft Sands. The reserve is open daily. Marsh Harriers, Avocets, Bearded Tits and other interesting wildlife may be seen on the reserve. Tel no 01405 704665. approx 15 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Fairburn Ings. The reserve is open daily and the visitor centre at weekends and bank holidays. An ideal place to see wetland birds at any time of the year. Reserve tel no 01977 603795. Approx 50 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Tophill Low This reserve is open all year with a variety of birds and wildlife. Tel 01377 270690. Approx 10 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Smaller sites of special interest and all within 45 minutes drive of Rudstone Walk include: Allerthorpe Common, Fen Carr, Fishlake, Filey Dams, Hopyard Haymeadow, Jeffry Bog, Keldmarsh, Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit, North Cliffe Wood, North Newbald Beckside, Pulfin Rifle Butts Quarry, Saltmarshe Delph, Thorpe Marsh, Welwick Saltmarsh, Wharram Quarry, Danes Dyke.

Stately Homes and Gardens [top]

Again we are really well catered for within a 1 hour drive from Rudstone Walk:

Burnby Hall Gardens has Europe's largest collection of water lillies and lots of hide and seek pathways through the gardens. Approx. 10 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Burton Agnes Hall and Gardens, near Beverley is a lovely Elizabethan hall filled with treasures collected over 4 centuries. Beautiful walled gardens with games and quirky corners reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Open April - October. Approximately 20 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Burton Constable near Hull contains a superb collection of Chippendale furniture, priceless stained glass and beautiful paintings. Landscaped by Capability Brown. Open March - October. Approx20 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Castle Howard One of the countries finest historic houses. Open February - November. Approve 40 minutes from Rudstone Walk.

Old Hall, Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. One of the most impressive medieval houses in the country.

Sledmere House is open from April - September, it is one of Yorkshire's best kept secrets. Famous for its plasterwork and mighty pipe organ which is actually played for visitors at various times during the week.

Sewerby Hall is a good all round family day out complete with hall, gardens and a small children's zoo.

Nearby Towns and cities [top]

Towns within 40 minutes drive include York, Beverley, Selby, Bridlington and Hull which each have their own famous churches, minsters, landmarks, visitor attractions and museums not forgetting the huge selection of shopping:

Hull - An historic waterfront city sharing an affinity with the sea spanning many centuries has created a city with a proud maritime heritage.

The Deep, Hulls world famous attraction with sharks, rays and the worlds deepest viewing tunnel enabling visitors to see the ocean floor is just a short drive from Rudstone Walk.

Hull offers many other museums, most of which have free admission:

Wilberforce House in Hull is the birthplace of William Wilberforce. This 17th century merchant's house traces the rise and fall of the slave trade.

Hull Maritime Museum with displays on whaling, fishing and shipping and maritime art.
Hull and East Riding Museum offers a really good overview of how the region evolved.

For almost 50 years the Spurn Lightship served as a navigational aid in the treacherous River Humber. Now moored in the marina her crew welcome you aboard.

Arctic Corsair Hull's last sidewinder trawler is also moored on the River Hull and guided tours are available around this vessel.

Art lovers are well catered for in the award winning Ferens Art Gallery with a diverse collection of old masters through to more contemporary work. There is even a children's gallery.

Fort Paull is Yorkshire's last remaining fortress of the Napoleonic era with museum, armouries and military vehicles.

The Humber Bridge is a tourist attraction in its own right being one of the world's longest single span suspension bridges.

Shoppers looking for a touch of retail therapy will not be disappointed at Princes Quay offering over 100 shops. The Edwardian Trinity Market hall is in the heart of Hull's old town offering shops and coffee bars.

City centre churches which are a must include St Mary's the Virgin. It is the oldest parish church in Hull dating back to the 13th century. After many years of silence the bells are now peeling again and the 15th century nave and chancel are well worth a visit

After the oldest visit the largest parish church in England. Holy Trinity Church founded in 1285, the current building is the 3rd church on the site and features medieval brickwork and impressive stained glass windows.

Charterhouse Chapel is a rare example of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture within a residential setting. Visits by arrangement only on 01482 329307.

St Charles Borromeo is the city's Roman Catholic church. The interior in the style of the Italian Renaissance will take your breath away. Visits by arrangement on 01482 329100.


Just 8 miles away from Rudstone is Beverley. Often referred to as York's smaller sister it is a lovely market town to visit with some impressive architecture. The following are just a taste of what is available for visitors to enjoy:

Museum of army transport offers displays of over 110 vehicles from the Crimean War to the Gulf conflict.

Beverley Minster is one of Britain's finest examples of medieval gothic architecture with the world's largest collection of stone carvings and the 700 year old Percy Tomb, a masterpiece of medieval art.

St Marys Church is equally splendid with its brightly painted Minstrel Pillar and the decorated ceiling depicting the Kings of England. See if you can find Lewis Carroll's march hare.

The Westwood which is still common land and where residents can still graze their cattle! It is well worth a visit for a stroll or even a game of golf

As well as a wonderful Saturday Market Beverley as a host of individual shops and boutiques from clothing to furniture. Jewellery enthusiasts will have fun at Karen Guest Antiques with a fine selection of antique and modern Jewellery Vicar Lane and St Crispin Antique Centres offer a lovely opportunity to browse or buy and with a great selection of furniture, cabinets and other collectibles.

York is literally just 40 minutes from our door with easy park and ride facilities to get you straight into the city centre. Visit:

The Yorkshire Museum and Gardens Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of the city centre some of Britain's finest Roman and Viking finds are displayed in the museum.
York Castle Museum is the story of 600 years of everyday life in Britain. A real treat. Jorvik takes you through York's viking history in a wonderful underground journey.
National Railway Museum is free and is a must for rail enthusiasts young and old.
York Minster is the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and a treasure house of stained glass. Climb the tower for an amazing view.

Easily accessible chain and individual shops are available in the city centre. Shopping areas not to miss are Swinegate, Coppergate. Must see shops include Mullberry Hall the famous china shop and Christmas Angels, Just outside York is the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet which has easy access from Rudstone Walk and houses over 115 outlet stores.

Coastal Resorts [top]

The Heritage coast of East Yorkshire is just 30 minutes away with its towering cliffs, breathtaking scenery and sandy beaches.

Bridlington Lovely sandy beaches for relaxation and play are here. The lovely Old Town is about a mile from the seafront where narrow medieval streets are line with unspoiled, original architecture. The Priory Church on the green is well worth a visit. The harbour is shared between the fishing boats and pleasure boats, and the charming little Harbour Museum tells of generations of fisherman. Throughout the summer

Hornsea was once a haunt of smugglers, the local church was used to stash contraband. For bargain hunters Hornsea Freeport is well worth a visit.

Walking and Exploring the Countryside

Whether walking, cycling or driving those looking to explore the countryside will have a glorious time. Various renowned trails pass very nearby to Rudstone Walk and we have a wealth of circular walks and routes to try. No queues at styles or gates await you here our countryside is wide and varied with space for all - you will love Walking the Riding. Good starting points are Goodmanham, Market Weighton, Drewton, Londesborough, Skidby, Brantingham, Millington. Newbald, Sancton, Walkington.

The 79 mile Wolds Way National Trail itself borders Rudstone Walk.

The Transpennine Trail crosses just South of Rudstone Walk at Howden and is good for cyclists and walkers. Route 66 is also well known to cyclists. The National Byway also takes in a lot of our attractive and lightly trafficked roads and byways for enthusiastic cyclists.

For those who prefer wheels there is the 40 mile Pocklington Round Scenic route which takes in Great Givendale, Huggate, Wetwang, Sledmere, Garton on the Wolds, Kirkburn, North Dalton, Warter and Kilnwick Percy

The Beverley 20s walks around the area are suitable for walking groups, along with the Wolds Way and Hudson Way. Parts of both of these well known trails can be walked in smaller circular walks suitable for the not so fit!

Sporting Opportunities [top]

Golfing

Inland and coastal course abound with something for every standard and taste:

Brough Golf Club (just 5 minutes from Rudstone Walk) provides an attractive and challenging course with a beautifully kept course.

For something completely different try Beverley and East Riding Golf Club which is housed on the famous Westwood on the outskirts of Beverley, just 8 miles from Rudstone Walk.

For those preferring coastal courses Bridlington has a links course.

Horse racing

Horse racing can be found within 15 minutes at Beverley race course on the historic Westwood. A lovely country course it has a unique atmosphere and provides a wide selection of afternoon and evening fixtures throughout the summer for those who fancy a flutter.

The internationally renownedYork Racecourse is easily accessible from Rudstone Walk.
