Mission Cambodia 2017 - 300 Mile Bike Ride - Rudstone Walk

21 July 2016 - Laura Greenwood

Its all excitement at the Greenwood household as we embark on our Mission Cambodia 2017 project. Hannah our 16 year old daughter is preparing  for her part in our fund raising challenge this summer as she takes on a 300 mile bike ride journey visiting 7 Yorkshire Racecourses in 7 days.

We have swapped Mission Cambodia 2017 for our family holiday in order to go with Hannah on The Mission Direct voluntary trip to Phnom Penh in Cambodia next February as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Gold award. Our trip is paid for but we now would love to raise as much of £5,000 as possible to cover the cost of building one house for a family that currently live on the rubbish tips of Phnom Penh.

Passionate about sport Hannah enjoys tennis, golf, hockey and is on the England Rounders U16 Squad: “It will be an amazing trip. I cannot change the world but I hope to make the difference to one of the poorest communities in the world. It has become our family goal  to raise the money and then help to  build a house for a family. As well as being a labourer for the house building, we will be working in the charities educational and welfare projects. I have the OK to teach the children in the school rounders which I am sure they will love – who doesn’t like rounders it is just a great game! Millie is looking forward to playing football and cricket and Lydia is hoping to share her love of UNO and dominoes!”

As well as building houses, we have a generous luggage allowance to take aid, clothing, school supplies, books.

Hannah continues “My grandfather Pat Rohan was a racehorse trainer in Malton for many  years.  He died at Christmas so we came up with the idea of cycling around the racecourses.

“Mum, dad, Millie, Lydia and Auntie Tor are my support crew and I have had offers of people coming to cycle with me for parts of the journey which is really kind. It is a huge amount of money but I will be pedalling as hard as I can to raise as much as possible!”
